The Hampton Lady Pirates and Norfolk State Spartans won the 2009 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Track and Field titles Saturday afternoon at the Prince George’s Sports and Learning Complex.

Hampton recorded 148 points en route to their seventh consecutive MEAC title and eighth overall. The Spartans of Norfolk State captured their fourth consecutive title with 150 total points.

Hampton’s Maurice Pierce was named the Women’s Outstanding Coach for the seventh straight year. “We did a good job of making sure we had people in the right place in case we made mistakes, explained Pierce.” “We’ve had great sprinters who gave us big points, and they really came through. I am so proud of my girls.”

Hampton’s Racquel Vassell posted 40.50 points to earn Outstanding Performer accolades. Vassell won the 60m dash, 200m dash and long jump.

“I didn’t want to tie again this year, said Vassell.” “We got big efforts all the way around and I am proud of the effort we got today.”

Norfolk State’s Marlon Woods was named the Outstanding Performer of the men. Woods won the high jump, triple jump and finished second in the long jump.

“I feel really good, and I'm really proud of my team, said Woods.” “We haven't had the best of weather to practice in, but our whole team came together to get the win.

Kenneth Giles of Norfolk State was named the Outstanding Coach. “It was what I expected of my team, said Giles.”  “We've got the youngest team we've ever had since I've been head coach. We knew what we were going to get out of our veterans, but our young guys really stepped up this weekend, too.”

Morgan State scored 103 points to finish second in the team standings. Hampton (96) and Maryland Eastern Shore (57) followed in second and third respectively.

It was also a record setting day for the men as Morgan State’s Tyron Benjamin captured the gold and set a new mark in the shot put. Benjamin’s toss of 18.01m (59-01.25 ft.) topped the previous mark of 17.92m (58-09.50 ft.) set by Maryland Eastern Shore’s Kimani Kirton in 2007.
