MEAC Track and Field Indoor Championships-Day Two

The Lady Hawks of Maryland Eastern Shore and Norfolk State Spartans lead after day two of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Indoor Track and Field Championships at the Prince George’s Sports and Learning Complex in Landover, Md.

 

The Lady Hawks tallied 52 points through six scored events to go ahead during the first day of competition. Hampton followed in second with 44 points. Morgan State (38), Norfolk State (35) and Coppin State (15) rounded out the top five.

 

Morgan State’s Leitawsha Bronson set a MEAC indoor record with a NCAA provisional qualifying mark of 15.56m (51-00.75 ft.) in the shot put event. Morgan State’s Ashley Horn held the previous record of 14.62m (47-11.25 ft.) that was set in 2004.

 

In men action, the Spartans led the competition with 55 points.  Morgan State (33), Coppin State (27) and Delaware State (26) finished as the top five through two days of competition.

 

Delaware State’s Donte Holmes set a meet record in the 800m run with a time of 1:51.59. The previous mark of 1:51.61 was set by Florida A&M’s Kevin Hicks in 2004.

 

Bethune-Cookman’s Ronnie Ash topped his own mark of 7.87 in the 60m hurdles at last year’s championship and set a new indoor record of 7.86.

 

It was also a record setting day for Hampton’s Reggie Dixon who tied a meet record with a time of 6.75. Norfolk State’s Derrick Baker also holds the record, which he set in 2006.

 

Norfolk State’s Corey Vinston leaped 7.86m (25-09.50 ft.) to set a meet record in the long jump. Vinston previously held the record along with Florida A&M’s David Barnett at 7.51m (24-07.25 ft.).

 

Coppin State’s Shane Smith shattered the meet record in the pole vault with a 5.00m (16-04.75 ft.) jump. Delaware State’s Brent Vanderpool held the previous mark of 4.75m (15-07 ft.) in 1988.

 

The final day of competition starts tomorrow at 9 a.m., with the women’s pole vault and women’s pentathlon events. Early afternoon field events include the men’s heptathlon, shot put, high jump and triple jump..  A complete schedule of events is available on www.meacsports.com.

 

Saturday, February 14 is designated as Youth Day. Fans 14 and under are admitted free.

 

Admission for the Indoor Track and Field Championships is $5 for adults and $3 for students, children, and senior citizens. Tickets are available at the Prince George’s Sports & Learning Complex the day of the event.
