Sophomore distance runner Jennifer Chichester finished second in the 800 meters (2:16.10) and the mile (5:05.48) and senior sprinter Victoria Faulkner ran a personal-best 8.79 to finish fifth in the 60-meter hurdles on Saturday at the 2009 Eddie & Joe Smith UNC Classic hosted by the University of North Carolina.
Faulkner ran an 8.89 in the preliminaries of the 60 hurdles to advance to the finals. She was trailed by sophomore Wanetta Kirby who qualified in 8.93 and finished 11th in 9.06. Kirby also participated in the invitational section of the long jump, recording a leap of 18-7?.
Senior sprinter Cheri Hodges was the Spartans' lone qualifier in the 60 meters (7.90) and took 11th place in the finals in 7.82.
In the field events, jumper Shanlynn Vaughn and pole vaulter Katie Wright took second in the open sections of their events. Vaughn jumped 5-2? in the high jump, while Wright cleared 10-8.
Junior jumper Janet Brown turned in third-place finishes in the open section of the long jump (18-8) and the invitational section of the triple jump (37-6). In the invitational section of the high jump, sophomore She'Anna Mitchell and junior Jonee Artis finished third (5-6) and seventh (5-4), respectively.
Faulkner (7th, 38-5?) and Brown (9th, 36-10?) also participated in the shot put invitational.
Next up, the Spartans take part in the Penn State National on Jan. 30-31.
