Rono Sets New School Record, Wins 5,000 Meters

NSU freshman Vincent Rono got his track career off to a fast start on Friday night at the Hampton Indoor Invitational, setting a new school indoor record in the 5,000 meters.

Rono’s winning time of 14 minutes, 33.15 seconds edged out previous record-holder David Kemboi by .81 of a second. Rono, participating in his first-ever indoor competition, finished more than 31 seconds ahead of second-place Mark Tompkins. His time was nearly two and a half minutes faster than the MEAC’s leading time coming into the weekend.

The 5,000 meters was the only individual final run on Friday evening. Rono will also run in the 3,000 meters on Saturday. The meet continues on Saturday morning, with field events beginning at 8 a.m. and men’s heptathlon events starting at 9 a.m.
