MEAC Announces Track and Field Weekly Honors

Hampton University junior Francena McCorory was chosen as the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Female Track and Field Athlete of the Week, the league announced on Wednesday. Norfolk State University junior Marlon Woods and Hampton University sophomore Reggie Dixon earned Male Co-Track and Field Athlete of the Week honors.

 

McCorory (So., Hampton, Virginia) set a meet record with a time of 54.03 in the 400m dash at the Penn State Invitational. McCorory’s time provisionally qualified her for the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships and ranks second in the nation and first in the MEAC in the event this season.

 

Dixon (So., Plainfield, New Jersey) set a meet record and provisionally qualified for the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships with a first-place finish in the 200m hurdles at the Penn State Invitational. His time of 21.18 seconds ranks first in the MEAC this season. The sophomore also won the 60m dash with a time of 6.79.

 

Woods (Jr., Norfolk, Virginia) set a school indoor record in the long jump at the Virginia Tech Hokie Invitational. His leap of 7.77m (25-6 ft.) is currently the longest long jump mark in the nation and provisionally qualified him for the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships. Woods also competed in the triple jump and finished third with a 15.3m (50-02.50 ft) mark. On the track, the junior finished third in the 60m hurdles with a time of 8.03.

 

Other Top Performers:

 

James Blocker (MSU) finished second and qualified provisionally for the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships with a 2.14m (7-00.25 ft) leap in the high jump at the Penn State Invitational.

 

Tavia Burke (B-CU) won the 60m hurdles with a time of 8.48 at the Doug Raymond Invitational, hosted by Kent State.

 

Merrecia James (UMES) captured the gold in the 800m dash with a time of 2:13.94 and ran the anchor on the 4x400m relay team that took home first-place honors with a time of 3:50.00.

 

Kristen Johnson (DSU) leaped a career-best 1.70m (5-07 ft) to finish first at the NYC Games/Gotham Cup.

 

Paul Jones-Burden (UMES) finished third at the Maryland Invite with a time of 50.02 in the 400m dash.

 

Tanisha Kendrick (MSU) placed second in the 400m dash with a time of 55.73 and ran the third leg of the 4x400m relay team that finished in second with a time of 3:48.22.

Leslie Murray (DSU) won the long jump with a leap of 7.31m (23-11.75 ft.) and finished fourth in the 400m dash with a time of 48.95 at the NYC Games/Gotham Cup.

 

Joel Redhead (B-CU) won the 200m dash (21.51) and 400m dash (48.51) at the Doug Raymond Invitational, hosted by Kent State.
