Delaware State women’s indoor track and field team had six first-place finishes, including three by Kendra Mayers, in a second-place showing at the University of Delaware Winter Invitational at the Delaware Fieldhouse Friday evening.
The Hornets trailed only first-place Navy in the final team standings. The Midshipman had 160.33 total points, while the Hornets collected 128.33. Host Delaware was third with 122.
Mayers, a sophomore, recorded first-place finishes in the long jump, triple jump and 400-meter dash.
In the long jump, Mayers topped the field with a top leap of 5.50 meters. Shekinah Taylor of Coppin State was second at 5.39 meters.
Mayers edged out Jennifer Tarsan of Monmouth to win the triple jump. Her best jump was 11.10 meter, while Tarsan topped out at 11.09.
In the 400-meter dash, Mayers posted a winning time of 58.71 seconds, more than a second better than runner-up Crystal Stein of Monmouth (59.94).
Delaware State also had first-place performances from Nekisha Franklin, who won the 60-meter dash and 200-meter dash, and from Morgan Hovington in the shot put.
Franklin topped the field in the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.65 seconds, and was clocked at 25.32 seconds to win the 200. Delaware State’s Kamera Brown was second in the 60-meter dash (7.82).
Hovington had a top throw of 12.50 meters to earn the victory in the shot put.
Delaware State Kristen Johnson was tied for second in the high jump (1.60m), while Jessika Shell was third in the long jump (5.24m) and Christen Dillard third in the triple jump (10.86m).
The Hornets also took third in the 1600-meter relay.
