Former NSU Track Stars Brown, Sturrup Qualify for Beijing Olympics

Former All-American Norfolk State track sprinters Chris Brown and Chandra Sturrup qualified for August’s Olympic Summer Games in Beijing with victories in the 400 and 100 meters, respectively, over the weekend at the Bahamas Association of Athletic Associations (BAAA) Olympic Trials.

Brown, 29, clocked a time of 45.43 seconds to edge 2008 NCAA Outdoor 400-meter champion Andretti Bain (Oral Roberts University), who ran 45.53. It was the second national 400-meter championship in Brown’s career. Earlier this month, he set the national record with a time of 44.40 at a meet in Oslo, Norway.

A two-time Division I All-American at NSU (2000-01), Brown will be seeking his first Olympic medal this summer. Brown won a silver medal at the 2001 World Championships and placed fourth in 2005 and 2007.

In Olympic competition, Brown advanced to the semifinals of the 400 meters at the 2004 Games in Athens and was on the Bahamas’ fourth-place 4x400 meter relay team at the 2000 Olympics in Sydney. Brown will also be a key figure on this year’s 4x400 relay team for the Bahamas, which should be one of the top competitors for the favorites from the United States.

Sturrup, 36, will be competing in her fourth Olympic Summer Games after also running in Atlanta (1996), Sydney and Athens. She won the 100 meters in 11.14 seconds over the weekend. She will also compete in Beijing in the 4x100 relay.

Sturrup is a two-time Olympic medalist as part of the Bahamian 4x100 meter relay team that won silver in Atlanta and gold in Sydney. Sturrup finished fourth in the 100 meters in Atlanta and sixth in Sydney.

Sturrup was a 10-time NCAA Division II national champion at Norfolk State from 1992-95, dominating the sprints (60, 100 and 200) as well as the long jump. She is the Bahamian national record-holder in the 100 meters (10.84).
