Junior Raphael Hall continued his strong outdoor season by advancing to Friday’s high jump finals, but teammate Marlon Woods re-aggravated a hamstring injury during Wednesday’s long jump prelims and was unable to finish competing in either of his two events.
Hall was among 15 athletes to advance in the high jump. He tied for 10th place in the prelims by clearing 2.10 meters (6 feet, 10.75 inches). Nine athletes cleared 2.14m (7-0.25), and Hall was one of six who cleared 2.10m.
Hall is trying to become the first NSU male to earn Division I All-American honors since triple jumper Desmond Kapofu in 2003. A top-eight finish would clinch that result for Hall.
Woods, though, was not able to finish competing after aggravating an injury he suffered in practice within the last week. Woods, who was named the Division I Southeast Regional Field Athlete of the Year on Tuesday, made just one successful attempt in the long jump on Wednesday despite being less than 100 percent. He leapt 7.30 meters (23 feet, 11.5 inches), but fouled on his next two tries after the injury worsened. Woods scratched from the high jump prelims.
“This is very disappointing for Marlon because he’s had a great year and is such a competitor,” NSU men’s track coach Kenneth Giles said. “But it’s better to shut him down than force anything because he’s got such a bright future ahead of him. He’s got two more years to reach his goals.”
