MEAC Tracksters Set For NCAA Regional

Over 90 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) track and field student-athletes will compete at the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field East Regional Championships Friday and Saturday, May 30-31 at the Mike Long Track on the campus of Florida State University.

The top five finishers in each individual event and the top three finishers in the 4x100m and 4x400m relays will automatically qualify for the 2008 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Des Moines, Iowa, June 11-14.

The Norfolk State Spartans, North Carolina A&T Aggies and Morgan State Bears track programs lead the MEAC with 15 student-athletes eligible to compete in this weekend’s meet.

Five MEAC athletes are among the top ten in their events in the nation. Norfolk State sophomore Marlon Woods, the 2008 MEAC Outdoor Track and Field Men’s Outstanding Performer, is sixth in the nation with a 7.95m long jump mark. Woods will also compete in the high jump after posting a 2.19m leap at this year’s MEAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships.

North Carolina A&T sophomore Calesio Newman is eighth in the nation with a time of 10.18 in the 100m dash. He also ranks third in the east region with a time of 20.67 in the 200m dash.

On the women’s side, Hampton sophomore Francena McCorory leads the east region with a time of 51.54 in the 400m dash that she recorded at the MEAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships. Maryland Eastern Shore senior Tanisha Wisdom is seventh in the 400m dash with a time of 52.90. North Carolina A&T sophomore Kimona Smith ranks eighth in the east region with a 13.01m jump in the triple jump.
