UMES Women, NSU Men Lead After Day Two of Track and Field Championships

 The Maryland Eastern Shore women and Norfolk State men lead after day two of the of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Hughes Stadium on the campus of Morgan State University.

The Lady Hawks scored 43 points through six events take the lead after the second day of competition. Junior Saisha Woodward led UMES with 18 points after winning the women’s javelin with a 38.20 (125-04 ft.) and finishing second in the shot put with a 14.24m (46-08.75 ft) throw.

Morgan State senior Leitawsha Bronson set a new MEAC outdoor record with a 14.69m (48-02.25 ft.) throw in the shot put event. Dionne Wright of Maryland Eastern Shore held the previous record of 14.63m (48-00 ft.), which she captured in 2006.

Delaware State’s Cuquie Melville won the gold in the heptathlon with 4,698 points. Coppin State’s Natoya Baird finished second with 4,616 points, while Victoria Faulkner of Norfolk State took home third place honors with 4,494 points.

Norfolk State finished second with 39 points. North Carolina A&T was third with 28 points, while Delaware State followed closely behind with 26 points. Hampton, the five-time defending MEAC women’s outdoor champion, scored 24 points to round out the top five.

On the men’s side, Norfolk State recorded 77 points to lead the pack after day two action. Marlon Woods tallied 20 of the Spartans points by winning the long jump with a 7.95m (26-01 ft.) leap and the high jump with a 2.19m (7-02.25 ft) jump.

Norfolk State’s Corey Vinston broke a meet record with his 7.93m (26-00.25 ft) long jump. The previous record of 7.84m (25-08.75 ft) was set in 1997 by Darron Frazier of North Carolina A&T. Although teammate Marlon Woods scored a higher jump, his jump was over the allowed 2.0 mps and does not count toward record purposes.

Bethune-Cookman’s Ronnie Ashe also set a new meet record in the 110m hurdles. Ashe broke the record with a time of 13.70 seconds. The previous record of 13.72 was set by Howard’s John Branch in 1989.

Teammate Harold Rose, Jr. won the decathlon with 6,405 points. Maryland Eastern Shore’s Jamahl Strachan was second with 6,070 points and Norfolk State’s Meredith Whitties finished in third with 5,924 points.

Maryland Eastern Shore finished second behind the Spartans with 31 points. Morgan State (22), North Carolina A&T (20) and Bethune-Cookman (12) completed the top five during the first day of competition.

The MEAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships will continue tomorrow at 10 a.m. Admission for the 2008 MEAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships is $3 for children, students, and senior citizens and $5 for adults. Tickets may be purchased at the Hughes Stadium box office the day of the event.
