The South Carolina State track and field teams recorded several high finishes at the Hurricane Invitational, hosted by Miami of Florida over the weekend, March 21-22, 2008.
The South Carolina State men placed second in three events, third in two and sixth in three others, while the women had one fifth-place finish, two sixth places and one seventh-place showing in the event.
In the men’s competition, the Bulldogs’ Lavar Knight was second in the long jump (23-05.50), Garrett Blakely finished second in the 400 meters (47.27) and the 4x100-meter relay team of LaTrico Blanding, Allen Hunter, Marvin Williams and Kenneth Rackins had a runnerup finish with a clocking of 42.00.
Other high finishes by the men were Jahwaun Blair, third in the shot with a toss of 48-10.75 and teammate Brian Coleman fifth in the same event with a throw of 46-08.00; Kenneth Rackins sixth in the 200 meters at 21.92; and Marvin Williams sixth in the 400-meter hurdles at 56.31.
Jasmine Smith led the Lady Bulldogs with a fifth in the triple jump (37-10.0), Rene McWilliams was seventh in the 100 meters at 12.29; the Lady Bulldog 4x100-meter relay team of Shari Sampson, Tempest Vance, McWilliams and Natalee Allen seventh with a time of 48.28; and the 4x400-meter relay team of Sampson, Allen, Elizabeth Govirk and Vance sixth with a clocking of 3:53.09.
