The Lady Hawks of Maryland Eastern Shore and Norfolk State Spartans lead after day one of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Indoor Track and Field Championships at the Prince George’s Sports and Learning Complex in Landover, Md.

Maryland Eastern Shore earned 36 points through five scored events to go ahead during the first day of competition. Merrecia James, the 2007 MEAC Cross Country Outstanding Performer, led the Lady Hawks with 10 points. James won the 800m run with a time of 2:16.40.
The Lady Hawks distance medley team set a new MEAC indoor record with their time of 11:41.16. The Lady Pirates of Hampton held the previous record with a time of 12:02.74 at last year’s championship.
Hampton, the five-time defending MEAC women’s indoor champion, finished second with 32 points. Morgan State (25.50), North Carolina A&T (24) and Norfolk State (16.50) round out the top five.

On the men’s side, the Spartans recorded 52 points to lead the pack after day one action. Norfolk State’s Brett Dodd led the way with a first place finish and 4.34m (14-02.75 ft.) leap in the pole vault.
It was also a record setting day for Bethune-Cookman’s Ronnie Ashe. Ashe broke the record in the 60m hurdles with a time of 7.87 seconds. The previous record of 7.89 was set by Hampton’s Terry Thornton in 2006.
Delaware State finished second behind the Spartans with 32 points. Bethune-Cookman (19), Coppin State (15) and Florida A&M (13) completed the top five during the first day of competition.
The MEAC Indoor Track and Field Championships will conclude on Saturday, February 16 beginning with the women's pole vault and women's pentathlon events at 9 a.m. Early afternoon field events include the men’s heptathlon, shot put, high jump and triple jump. Spectators will see the men’s and women’s mile run, 60m hurdles, 60m dash, 200m dash, and 400m dash. The championship will conclude with the women’s 3000m and men’s 5000m run and the highly anticipated men’s and women’s 4x400m relay.
Saturday, February 16 is Adopt a MEAC Team Day. Fans are encouraged to select one of the participating MEAC institutions and show their support by wearing the team’s colors.
Admission for the Indoor Track and Field Championships is $5 for adults and $3 for students, children, and senior citizens. Tickets are available at the Prince George’s Sports & Learning Complex the day of the event.
