Dunn Leads Coppin State at Navy Invitational

 Freshman Dale Dunn won the 800 meters at the Navy Invitational on Wednesday to lead Coppin State in its opening meet of the 2007-08 indoor track and field season.

Dunn, competing in his first meet as an Eagle, finished in 1:56.75 to finish just ahead of Donte Holmes of Delaware State and teammate Jieutonne Archer. Holmes was second in 1:56.85, while Archer placed third in 1:57.88.

The Coppin State 4x400-meter relay team finished second and met the IC4A qualifying standard in the process. The Eagles finished in 3:19.45 bettering the standard of 3:19.90.

Coppin State All-American Steve Delice opened the indoor season with a second-place showing in the 400 meters. Delice finished in 49.71, while Burton Clark of Delaware State won the race in 49.02.

Senior Ian Lovergie established a personal indoor record by clearing 6-5 in the high jump, which earned him a second-place finish. Lovergie, who is the school record holder outdoors, tied for the third-best indoor jump in school history.

Senior Shane Smith placed third in the pole vault with a 14-0 effort.

Coppin State showcased depth in the sprints with solid outings in the 200 and 400 meters.

Freshman Andre Pinnock led the Eagles in the 200 by placing fourth overall in 23.03, while sophomore Winston Whittingham was fifth in 23.09. Freshman Shavar Watson was eighth in 23.85 and Kevon Jackson finished ninth overall in 23.89.

Whittingham also finished fourth overall in the 400 meters in a time of 51.31, while Pinnock was 14th in 52.83 and Jackson placed 16th in 53.13.

Senior Anthony Littlejohn opened his indoor season with an eighth-place finish in the mile. The Severn, Md., native finished the race in 4:36.62.
