NCCU Football Greats Breeden, Montgomery Now Hall of Famers

DURHAM, N.C. North Carolina Central University football greats Louis Breeden and Albert Montgomery have recently been inducted into two separate Halls of Fame in the state of North Carolina.

Breeden has been inducted into the NC Sports Hall of Fame, while Montgomery is part of the Gaston County Sports Hall of Fame class of 2026.

Breeden was a safety for the Eagles from 1973-76, the program's first tenure with the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC). He was a second-team all-conference honoree in 1974, and first-team in 1975 and 1976, leading the team in interceptions in all three seasons.

After his collegiate career, where his seven interceptions are tied for fourth in program history, Breeden was a seventh-round draft pick by the Cincinnati Bengals in 1977. He played in Cincinnati for 10 years, racking up 33 career picks, and he was on the 1982 Bengals squad that played in Super Bowl XVI.

A 1982 All-Pro selection, Breeden was inducted into the Alex M. Rivera NCCU Athletics Hall of Fame in 1985.

Montgomery was an Eagle from 1953-56, earning First Team All-CIAA honors at quarterback as a senior. He was also a punter for NCCU, and he ranks third in program history with a career average of 39.6 yards per punt.

In 1954, Montgomery averaged 41.7 yards per punt, which is tied for sixth in program history for a single season.

Montgomery was inducted into the Alex M. Rivera NCCU Athletics Hall of Fame as a member of the 1953 and 1954 CIAA Football Championship Teams.
