Norfolk, Va. -- The Norfolk State Lady Spartans hosted their first-round matchup of the Women’s National Invitational Tournament (WNIT) at Joseph G. Echols Memorial Hall on Saturday, falling in a nail-biter to Loyola Chicago, 58–54.
The contest remained tight throughout, with the largest lead of the game being just six points (20–14) in the second quarter held by Norfolk State. There were six lead changes and 15 ties, as the game came down to the final seconds of regulation. Loyola Chicago ultimately held on for the four-point victory to advance to the second round.
Norfolk State was led by Da’Brya Clark, with 19 points, four assists, and two steals. Carmen Kweti added eight points and five assists.
Loyola Chicago had three players score in double figures, led by Brooklyn Vaughn with 13 points and six rebounds. Alexa Kinas and Kira Chivers each contributed 10 points.
The Spartans conclude the season with an 18–15 overall record in the first year under head coach Jermaine Woods. The appearance marked Norfolk State’s fifth consecutive postseason berth and its second appearance in the WNIT in program history.
