MORGANTOWN, W.V. – In a match that couldn’t get any closer, Coppin State’s volleyball team fell to Liberty, 3-2 (25-22, 22-25, 25-22, 22-25, 15-13) on Thursday afternoonin the opening game of the WVU Invitational.  The Eagles fell to 1-3 in the season while the Flames remained perfect at 4-0.
 
For the first time in nearly four years, Coppin had a pair of players with at least 20 kills as senior TaKenya Stafford and freshman Cherisse Atilano put up 21 kills apiece, tying Liberty’s Paige Overcash for a match high. Stafford posted her four-straight double-double to open the season with 18 digs while Atilano finished a dig shy of one. Both players had three blocks while Atilano hit .318 to Stafford’s .278.
 
The last time Coppin had a pair of players with at least 20 kills was on September 26, 2021, in a 3-2 loss at NC Central. Paola Caten had 28 kills in that match while Miajavon Colemanrecorded 24 for Coppin.  Ammaarah Williams, who later played at Coppin, had 19 kills to lead NC Central that afternoon.
 

Montana State (Big Sky) def. Md. Eastern Shore - 3-2 - BOX SCORE | RECAP

SPOKANE, Wa. - Maryland Eastern Shore (2-3) was outlasted by Montana State (2-2) in five sets at Charlotte Y. Martin Centre.

Montana State began the match on a 12-4 run. The Hawks fought back to get within one point, surviving three straight match points to put the score at 24-23. Ultimately, Montana State edged out UMES to take the opening frame.

The Hawks and Bobcats split the first 30 points of set two. Tied 15-15, Montana State pulled away by scoring 10 of the next 14 points to clinch a 25-19 win.
