HAGERSTOWN, Md. – Norfolk State Director of Track and Field Programs Kenneth Giles will join the Hagerstown Community College Sports Hall of Fame Class of 2025.
"Being named to the Hagerstown Community College Sports Hall of Fame Class of 2025 is a true honor," Giles said. "I'm grateful for the memories, lessons, coaches, teammates, and family who made this achievement possible."
Giles built his decorated coaching career on the foundation of his own success as an athlete. A standout 800-meter runner in college, Giles earned Junior College All-America honors in 1985 after finishing eighth at the indoor national meet for Hagerstown (Md.) Community College. He continued his career at the University of North Florida, where he set the school's 800-meter indoor record.
"Coach Giles has set a standard of excellence that extends far beyond wins and championships," Vice President and Director of Athletics Dr. Melody Webb said. "His dedication to our student-athletes' growth, both on and off the track, reflects the very best of Norfolk State University. This honor from Hagerstown Community College is a well-deserved recognition of a truly remarkable career."
At Norfolk State, Giles has collected 43 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Most Outstanding Coach awards. His Spartans have won 11 individual MEAC cross country championships, produced three NCAA All-Southeast Region honorees, and made history in 2006 when David Kemboi became the first NSU and MEAC runner to qualify for the NCAA National Championship race.
Since taking over as head track coach, Giles' athletes have won more than 100 individual conference championships, earned over 400 All-MEAC honors, and qualified for the NCAA Regionals over 100 times. He guided the NSU men's cross-country team to a record seven straight MEAC titles from 2000-06, followed by four more from 2008-11, and another run of conference dominance with titles in 2017, 2019, 2021, 2022, 2023, and 2024. His teams have also earned four MEAC runner-up finishes.
On the track, Giles led the Spartans to a record seven consecutive sweeps of the MEAC indoor and outdoor championships from 2006-12, along with eight straight indoor crowns from 2006-13. NSU reclaimed both indoor and outdoor titles from 2021-25, matching their success in cross country for multiple yearly sweeps.
Giles will be formally inducted into the Hagerstown Community College Sports Hall of Fame on Oct. 11, 2025.
