College Park, Maryland--The Delaware State Women's Tennis Team competed in the Bedford Cup Invitational at the JTCC in College Park, Maryland this past weekend. Competing against 11 different schools (including Conference rivals Morgan State, Norfolk State, and Coppin State), the Hornets racked up 19 wins (13 in singles and 6 in doubles) throughout the weekend.
Stand out performances from freshmen Hannah Watkins and Maite Bou Safont for winning the Bedford Cup Flight 2 Doubles Championship, going undefeated in doubles for the entire three-day tournament. Maite Bou went on to finish the weekend with 3 out of 4 singles wins as well, only dropping one loss to Tyler Williams from Morgan State in a 3rd set tie breaker.
Other highlights include Senior Lucia Casas Blas's singles win over Conference rival Lauryn Hall from Morgan State, Sophomore Sia Mahajan's singles win over Conference rival Marta Serra from Morgan State, Freshman Alba Benedito's singles win over Conference rival Irina Iurea from Norfolk State, and Freshman Kayla Wright's conference win over Sirena Singh from Coppin State.
Freshman Audrey Yvana Mengue won 3 out of her 4 singles matches (including two conference wins over Sapphire Ferguson and Kyla Proctor from Coppin State), and barely lost to a veteran player from Johns Hopkins University in a 10 point tie break.
The Hornets travel to Cary, NC next week to compete in the MEAC Individual Championship Tournament on October 2-4, 2025.
