BALTIMORE, MD – The Delaware State Lady Hornets came back from two sets down to defeat the North Carolina Central Eagles, 3-2 (26-28, 23-25, 25-22, 25-15, 16-14), advancing to the MEAC Volleyball Tournament semifinals.
Gerren Tomlin led Delaware State with 20 kills, followed by Amanda Santos Juliao with 19, while Kamren Harper paced NCCU with 23 kills.
The match came down to a pivotal fifth set, with NCCU holding a 14-13 lead. Tomlin went up for a kill that initially appeared out, giving the Eagles the advantage. Delaware State head coach David Brooks challenged the call, and the referee ruled there was a touch, reversing the point. The Lady Hornets then scored the final three points to secure the win.
“There’s no point in leaving with a challenge in your pocket,” Brooks said. “I tell these girls from day one: swing hard. You have to go for it in life. If you do, good things happen. I love that Gerren went for that ball. The refs saw a touch, and it’s just a good thing that happens.”
North Carolina Central finished the season 10-18. Delaware State (12-17) will face the winner of Match 2 tomorrow at 5:00 p.m., live on ESPN+.
