WASHINGTON (November 13, 2025) – Graduate guard
Bryce Harris (Brentwood, N.Y.) poured in a game-high 24 points, but it was some clutch free-throw shooting by junior guard
Cam Gillus (Falls Church, Va.) that helped the Howard University men's basketball team hold off Alcorn State University, 72-64, in a nonconference HBCU clash at Burr Gymnasium.
A preseason All-MEAC First Team selection, Harris connected on 9-of-12 from the field and just missed a double-double with nine rebounds. The graduate guard also picked up three assists and two blocked shots.
The Braves (0-4) from the Southwestern Athletic Conference battled the Bison from the tip with each possession coming down to under 10 seconds on the shot clock.
Howard (2-2) was able to take a 28-23 lead to the locker room on the strength of Harris, who tallied 14 of his team's points.
The Braves countered with Tycen McDaniels, who scored 12 of his team's points.
The Bison threatened to put the game away when they went on an 8-2 run to take a 14-point lead a little over 16 minutes in the second half.
But the scrappy Braves refused to go away, fighting their way back with a run of their own to cut the margin, 58-52, with 4:11 left.
The Alcorn State surge was led by reserve guard Jameel Morris, who scored 13 of his team-high 15 points.
Following the under four media timeout, the Bison put together a 12-8 run to take a 70-60 lead with 60 seconds left in regulation. The run was fueled by Gillus, who converted 5-of-6 free throws.
The Braves scored six unanswered points, but they ran out of time as Howard secured its second win of the young season.
Sophomore forward
Travelle Bryson (Anderson, S.C.) had another solid outing for Howard with 12 points and six rebounds. Senior guard
Ose Okojie (Brampton, Canada) chipped in with 10 points and Gillus finished with nine points, five assists and four steals.
Alcorn was led by Morris with 15 off the bench, followed by McDaniels (14 points) and Davian Williams (11 points), respectively.
Howard won the battle in the paint, 42-30, and 16-2 on second-chance opportunities.
It is important to note that the Bison played without the services of three starters: junior guards
Alex Cotton (Carrollton, Texas) and
Cedric Taylor III (Atlanta) and freshman center
Danas Kazakevicius (Vilnius, Lithuania).
NEXT UP: Howard travels to Deland, Fla., to take on Stetson Wednesday (Nov. 19) at 7 p.m.
