CARY, N.C. – Day Two of the 2nd Annual MEAC Tennis Invitational delivered high-level competition in both singles and doubles play, setting the stage for Championship Saturday at Cary Tennis Park.
In women’s singles semifinal action, Norfolk State’s Yuliya Yurkova outlasted Delaware State’s Catherine Goldman in a three-set thriller, 7-9, 6-4, 6-3. On the opposite side of the bracket, South Carolina State’s Valeria Teran edged Howard’s Imani Jean, 6-3, 7-5. With their victories, Yurkova and Teran advance to the championship match, set for Saturday, Oct. 4, at 9 a.m. Teran is the lone South Carolina State player in this year’s finals after the Bulldogs swept both singles and doubles titles in 2024.
Quarterfinal action in women’s doubles also featured several competitive battles. Howard’s duo of Camille Hall and Imani Jean advanced with a 7-5, 6-3 victory over Norfolk State’s Angelia Maniawska and Yuliya Yurkova, while top-seeded Alejandra Hidalgo and Mariana Zottoli of North Carolina Central topped Delaware State’s Alba Benedito and Catherine Goldman, 6-1, 7-5.
In the semifinals, Hidalgo and Zottoli maintained their momentum, defeating South Carolina State’s Ashikha Amalnathan and singles finalist Valeria Teran, 6-2, 7-5. On the other side of the bracket, Valeria San Miguel Soria (NCCU) and Sara Barbaric (Delaware State) rallied past Lucia Casa Blas and Sia Mahajan, 3-6, 6-2, 1-0, to secure their spot in the final.
The women’s doubles championship will be contested immediately following singles play on Saturday, with the winners earning the MEAC’s automatic qualifying spot in the ITA Conference Masters.
