NORFOLK, Va. --- The Norfolk State football team returns to action in the 64th edition of the Battle of the Bay on Saturday, Oct. 4, with a 4 p.m. kickoff at Armstrong Stadium in Hampton, Va.

The Spartans (1-4), led by first-year head coach Michael Vick, aim to capture their second win of the season, while rival Hampton (1-4) looks to halt a three-game skid.

ABOUT NORFOLK STATE

Norfolk State heads into Saturday's matchup with Hampton still searching for its first road win of the 2025 campaign, and its first since Sept. 21, 2024, when the Spartans defeated VMI 32-10 in Lexington, Va. Last weekend, NSU battled but came up just short in an 18-13 setback at Wagner.

Quarterback Otto Kuhns directed the offense with 119 passing yards on 17-of-28 completions. DreSean Kendrick paced the receiving corps with 33 yards, while Taron Biles-Walker (29), J.J. Evans (28) and Elyjah Mitchell (26) all chipped in as reliable targets.

On the ground, Kevon King led the rushing attack with 48 yards and a touchdown, supported by Jaylen Laudermilk (27), Kuhns (25) and X'Zavion Evans (24), the latter adding NSU's second score.

Defensively, the Spartans delivered a balanced performance. Terique Miles led the way with 10 tackles, while Corey Chapman and Major Dillard each tallied nine. NSU also came up with two interceptions, courtesy of Chapman and Kaleb Broadbent. Chapman's standout effort earned him MEAC Defensive Player of the Week honors.

The Spartans currently lead the FCS national rankings in blocked kicks (5), rank sixth in blocked punts (1), and sit 12th nationally in kickoff return defense (14.93 yards/return).

ABOUT HAMPTON

Hampton enters Saturday's matchup at 1-4 overall (0-2 CAA), looking to snap a three-game skid following last week's 41-20 conference loss to Elon.

Quarterback Braden Davis completed 17 of 24 passes for 194 yards with one touchdown, but also threw two interceptions and was sacked four times. Tae'Shaun Johnson proved to be his top target, hauling in six receptions for 110 yards and a score.

On the ground, Jah'Kei Chavis paced the Pirates with 94 yards and a touchdown on 11 carries, highlighted by a 75-yard burst.

Nationally, Hampton ranks 13th in kick return defense (15.06 yds/return), 19th in fumbles recovered (4), 20th in rushing offense (195.8 ypg), 21st in passing yards allowed (166.0 ypg), and 27th in team pass efficiency defense (119.62).
