Bethune-Cookman’s Malik Maitland and Howard’s RJ Cole have been selected as the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Co-Men’s Basketball Players of the Week, the conference announced today. Florida A&M’s M.J. Randolph was named Rookie of the Week while Cletrell Pope of Bethune-Cookman is the Defensive Player of the Week.
Maitland averaged 20 points, eight assists, 3.5 rebounds and three steals as Bethune-Cookman finished the week with a 1-1 mark. In the win versus Stetson on Monday night, Maitland scored 23 points with eight assists and four rebounds while shooting 54.5 percent from the field. He scored 17 points versus Omaha on Nov. 20 while also dishing out eight assists and three steals. The junior from Daytona Beach, Fla. was near-perfect from the charity stripe as he nailed 11-of-12 attempts for a 91 percent clip.
Cole topped all scorers in the MEAC with 28.8 points per contest over the past week. The Bison finished 1-1 with a win over Cal Baptist as Cole poured in 31 points with six rebounds, two steals and five assists. He opened the tournament versus Little Rock with a 26-point performance. Cole was nearly perfect from the free throw line as he nailed 11-of-12 attempts for a 91 percent clip and averaged four rebounds and 1.5 steals.
Pope averaged 10.5 rebounds and three blocks over the past week for the Wildcats. He started the week off with a seven-rebound, three-block performance versus Omaha on Nov. 20 and closed it out with a 14-rebound, three-block outing versus Stetson. He also had a solid night offensively versus Stetson with 15 points on 7-of-8 shooting.
Randolph secured his first honor of the 2018-19 season after averaging 8.5 points, seven rebounds, and three assists in two contests last week. He pulled down nine rebounds while scoring nine points on a perfect night from the field at South Florida while scoring eight points with five boards and four assists at Loyola Marymount.
NOTABLE PERFORMERS
Damani Applewhite (South Carolina State) averaged 17.3 points and 10 rebounds for the Bulldogs in two games.
Derrik Jamerson (Norfolk State) posted a double-double with 14 points and controlled the boards with a total of 13 (four offensive, nine defensive) in the win over Regent University.
Fahim Jenneto (Delaware State) averaged 12 points and 4.5 rebounds in games versus Washington State and The College of St. Elizabeth.
D.J. Jones (Florida A&M) accumulated a total of five blocks, two steals, and seven rebounds in contests against USF and Washington State.
C.J. Kelly (Norfolk State) scored 10 points with a career-high four blocks and five rebounds against Regent University.
Jonathan Mitchell (Delaware State) averaged 17.5 points and 6.5 rebounds in two games last week. He scored a career and team-high 18 points and grabbed six rebounds at Washington State. He shared the team lead with 17 points and recorded seven rebounds versus The College of St. Elizabeth.
Justin Ravenel (Florida A&M) averaged 16.5 points over a two-game span versus South Florida and Loyola Marymount.
Tyler Streeter (Morgan State) scored 15 points (6-of-7) off the bench to help lead the Bears to their first-ever win against Navy. The senior from Chicago also posted 14 points off the bench in the Bears’ home win against Mount Saint Mary’s. He shot 73 percent from the field and was a perfect 5-for-5 from the stripe and scored 29 points thru two games.
Ibrahim Sylla (North Carolina A&T State) averaged 14 points and nine rebounds while shooting 60 percent from the field in games versus Marshall and Mount St. Mary’s.
