Norfolk State's Jonathan Wade has been selected as the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Men’s Basketball Player of the Week, the conference announced today. Howard's Charles Williams earned Rookie of the Week honors, while Kyle Benton, of North Carolina Central, was named Defensive Player of the Week.
Wade averaged a double-double of 20.5 points, 11 rebounds and one steal as the Spartans upped their winning streak to 10 after holding off Florida A&M and South Carolina State last week. The Panama City, Fla. native upped his streak of double-doubles to five while also shooting 90 percent (18-of-20) from the free throw line after last week’s contests. Wade scored 27 points, grabbed 11 rebounds and notched two steals versus South Carolina State on Feb. 15. In a double overtime win over Florida A&M on Feb. 18, Wade scored 14 points and connected on 7-of-8 free throws in overtime.
Williams earns Rookie of the Week honors for the sixth time this season after averaging 20 points, four rebounds and two steals as the Bison have won two straight. Williams scored 25 points with four rebounds and was 50 percent from the field in the win versus North Carolina A&T State on Feb. 18. In the home win versus Morgan State on Feb. 13, Williams had four steals and scored 15 points. He also shot 53.8 percent (7-of-13) from the three-point arc in two games.
Benton averaged 8.5 rebounds, two blocks and two steals in helping North Carolina Central remain atop the MEAC standings. Benton grabbed 10 rebounds, blocked three shots, and tallied three steals versus Florida A&M on Feb. 13 and returned to the court five days later with seven rebounds, one block and a steal at Maryland Eastern Shore.
Chas Brown (CSU) posted a double-double with 22 points and 12 rebounds in the win over Delaware State
Dejuan Clayton (CSU) shot 84.6 percent (11-of-13) from the free-throw line, to finish with 26 points, against South Carolina State.
Terry Harris, Jr. (CSU) averaged 20 points, 7 rebounds and 1 block against Delaware State and South Carolina State.
Desmond Williams (FAMU) scored a team-high 20 points, on 8-of-17 shooting, in the double-overtime loss to Norfolk State. Williams also compiled six blocks in two games played last week.
Damon Collins (HOW) averaged 16 points, 3.5 rebounds, 5 assists and 1.5 steals in wins over Morgan State and North Carolina A&T State.
Tyler Stone (HOW) came off the bench to record 18 points, 11 rebounds and four blocks against Morgan State and North Carolina A&T State.
Phillip Carr (MSU) led the Bears with 15 points and nine rebounds in the ESPNU televised game against Howard. Also averaged 10.5 rebounds in two games played last week.
Patrick Cole (NCCU) notched his sixth double-double of the season, against Maryland Eastern Shore, with 17 points and 10 rebounds.
