Morgan State's Tiwian Kendley and North Carolina Central's Patrick Cole have been selected as the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference co-men's basketball players of the week, the conference announced today. Savannah State freshman Robert Kelly, Jr. was named Rookie of the Week while Norfolk State's Alex Long captured Defensive Player of the Week honors.
Kendley picks up his second co-player of the week honor this season as the junior from Harlem, NY native led Morgan State to a non-conference win over Manhattan of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference. Against Manhattan, Kendley scored a MEAC-best 40 points while shooting 52 percent from the field. He also shot 84 percent (11-of-13) from the free throw line and grabbed nine rebounds. He became just the fourth Bear to hit the 40-point benchmark in Morgan State history as the last time a MSU student-athlete scored 40-plus points occurred in 1976.
NCCU finished the week with a 1-1 mark as they earned a win over LIU-Brooklyn of the Northeast Conference. Cole averaged 23 points over the last two games, including a 28-point output at Coastal Carolina. The senior averaged nine assists per contest including a career-high 13 assists against LIU Brooklyn. Cole also shot 46.4 percent from the field, averaged six rebounds and two steals as he averaged 37 minutes of playing time.
Kelly led Savannah State to its first-ever win over the PAC 12's Oregon State as the freshman from Powder Springs, Ga. scored a game-high 24 points on 81.8 percent shooting (9-for-11) off the bench. He also grabbed nine rebounds and had a blocked shot as his play in overtime sparked a 7-0 run to seal the contest.
Long had a career-high 15 rebounds and three blocked shots in one game last week. Long currently leads the MEAC in blocked shots and has earned defensive player of the week honors for the second consecutive week.
