Morgan State's Tiwian Kendley and North Carolina Central's Patrick Cole were named co-MEAC Men's Basketball Players of the Week, the conference announced today. Morgan State's Phillip Carr was selected as the MEAC Defensive Player of the Week while Florida A&M’s Desmond Williams was named Rookie of the Week.
Cole had a solid week on the hardwood as the senior led the Eagles to a 2-1 mark with Division I wins over Jackson State and Western Carolina. The senior from Newark, N.J. averaged 20 points, 7.3 rebounds and 6.3 assists while shooting 47 percent from the field. Cole's best highlight of the week occurred in the home opener versus Jackson State as he became the first Eagle in their Division I history to post a triple-double with 14 points, 12 rebounds and 10 assists.
Kendley averaged 24.3 points per game, 8.7 rebounds, and shot 38.5 from the field, including 27-of-30 (90 percent) from the free throw line, in three games for the Bears. The junior guard from Harlem, N.Y. scored in double figures all three games last week, including his first double-double when he posted a season-high 28 points and 11 rebounds versus Campbell. He also scored 26 points and grabbed six rebounds versus Towson along with 19 points and nine rebounds versus Wilmington.
Carr, a Preseason All-MEAC Second Team selection, had a very steady and productive week for the Bears over his last three games. The junior forward from Brooklyn, N.Y. averaged 17.7 points and pulled down 28 rebounds (9.3 rpg) for the Bears and fell just shy of recording back-to-back double-doubles. He recorded 21 points with 13 rebounds in a win versus Wilmington, following by a 21 point, nine-rebound outing in the win against Campbell. Carr also tallied six blocks with four steals during the week.
Williams led the Rattlers to a 2-1 mark over the past week as he averaged 15.7 points per game, 7.7 rebounds, 1.3 steals and one block per game. He shot 58.3 percent from the field and 71.4 percent from the free throw line. He scored a high of 17 points against Johnson & Wales with highs of eight rebounds against Trinity and Air Force. The Atmore, Ala. native also had two steals apiece against Air Force and Johnson & Wales while also recording two blocks versus Trinity.
