The South Carolina State University Lady Bulldogs and Howard University Lady Bison will compete Sunday, April 15 in the 2012 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Tennis Championship women's final beginning at 9 a.m.
The reigning MEAC Champion South Carolina State Lady Bulldogs, who earned the top seed in the south, defeated the No. 2 North Carolina Central Lady Eagles. The Lady Bulldogs took the lead going into singles play after winning the doubles point at the number two (8-3) and number three (8-0) spots.
In singles action, S.C. State won in straight sets at the number five and six spots as SCSU's Victoria Khatcei defeated NCCU's Julia Aguilar and Laura Bosneag topped Lakisha McDougold. Maria Craciun of SCSU earned the deciding point with a 6-0, 6-3 win over Ekaterina Nekrasova at the number three singles position. The Lady Bulldogs will compete for their eighth straight MEAC women's tennis title and ninth overall.
Howard, the third in the north defeated Delaware State, the top seed in the north, and will vie for their first tennis championship title since the 1995 season. The Lady Bison won the doubles point with the duo of Katelyn Stokes and Brittney Morgan defeating Maja Banas and Kesnia Kozlova 8-2. During singles play, Howard won the match with wins at the number one, three and four singles positions to advance. Michelle Brown, the 2010 MEAC Player of the Year, defeated Vanja Andonova, the 2012 MEAC Rookie of the Year, 6-1, 6-3 to clinch the match for the Lady Bison.
The Lady Bison and the Lady Bulldogs will meet in the championship final for the third straight season. South Carolina State won last year women's championship 4-0.
