Norfolk State Rolls, Howard Survives Thriller to Advance to MEAC Semifinals

CARY, N.C., April 23, 2026 - The 2026 MEAC Men’s Tennis Tournament began with quarterfinal action that sent No. 3 Norfolk State and No. 5 Howard through to the semifinals on April 24. They will face stiff competition from No. 1 South Carolina State and No. 2 North Carolina Central, both of whom skipped the opening round after earning byes into semifinal Friday. 

Match 1: No. 3 Norfolk State def. No. 6 Coppin State l 4-0 
Norfolk State earned a 4-0 win over Coppin State to advance to the semifinal round of the MEAC Men’s Tennis Championships, where the Spartans will face No. 2 seed North Carolina Central. 

Norfolk State found success from the opening serve, claiming wins at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles, while the No. 3 doubles match between Szymon Malecki and Marcin Andrzejczak and Coppin State’s Dentry Mortimer and Flavius Henderson went unfinished, with Norfolk State leading 15-0 at the No. 3 position. 

The Spartans carried that momentum into singles play, securing the remaining points to complete the 4-0 final. 

Norfolk State will meet No. 2 North Carolina Central in the semifinal round for the second consecutive year, with first serve scheduled for 12 p.m. 

Match 2: No. 5 Howard def. No. 4 Morgan State, 4-3 
No. 5 seed Howard earned a hard-fought 4-3 victory over No. 4 Morgan State to punch its ticket to the semifinals, where it will face reigning MEAC champions and top seed South Carolina State. 

The Bison struck first in doubles play, as Second Team All-MEAC honoree Michael Major Jr. and Kamran McIntosh-Ross powered a 6-1 win at the No. 1 spot. At No. 2 doubles, Kendrick Lash and Marcus Weekes followed with a 6-4 victory over Morgan State’s Rhajzon Rankins and Yessine Kerouat, while the No. 3 matchup went unfinished. 
Howard carried that momentum into singles competition, picking up wins at the top three positions. Morgan State responded with a strong push, taking the final three singles matches, but it wasn’t enough as the Bison ultimately secured the overall team win.  

No. 5 seed Howard is set to face top-seeded South Carolina State, with a spot in the MEAC championship on the line. First serve is scheduled for 12 p.m.
