NORFOLK, Va. – The North Carolina Central women's tennis team came up short in its final conference match, falling 5-2 at Norfolk State on Thursday afternoon.
The Spartans snapped the Eagles four-match winning streak, but Alejandra Hidalgo Vega finished conference play undefeated in both singles and doubles this season.
NCCU (8-9, 4-2 MEAC) fell behind early after dropping the doubles point. Three singles matches were tightly contested. Valeria San Miguel Soria dropped her No. 2 singles match in three sets, while Sara Barbaric also went the distance but prevailed, winning the first and third sets in the No. 5 slot.
At No. 1 singles, Hidalgo Vega capped her perfect conference run with a victory over Yuliya Yurkova. After dropping the opening set, she responded with a 6-3 win in the second before edging the 10-point tiebreaker 10-8 to secure a flawless 6-0 MEAC singles record.
NSU (14-9, 5-1 MEAC) earned a share of the regular season title with the win.
The Eagles will celebrate their two seniors as Hidalgo Vega and San Miguel Soria will be honored pre-match on Saturday, April 11 when NC Central hosts Shaw. The match will be held at the NCCU Courts at 1 p.m., closing the regular season.
