BALTIMORE – Xzylia Maravilla cranked a pinch-hit walkoff three-run home run to lead the Coppin State softball team to a 11-10 victory over Delaware State on Sunday afternoon at CSU Softball Complex.  The Eagles moved to 2-15 overall and 1-8 in the MEAC while the Hornets fell to 10-16 on the year and 3-6 in league play.

Trailing 10-8 heading into the bottom of the ninth, Leslie Sereno started the frame with a popup single to the pitcher's circle that none of the infielders took charge to catch. Following a flyout, Brooklyn Tapusoa doubled to dead center to put two runners into scoring position for Maravilla, who connected on a 1-2 pitch and slugged it over the left field fence.

Tapusoa finished 3-of-4 with two runs and two RBI while finishing a triple shy of the cycle. Julianna Mejia also had a pair of hits and scored two runs and Camaren Corbett matched Maravilla with three RBI.

Brooklyn Lee-Scott gave up just one earned run on three hits while striking out two batters in 2.2 innings.  Debra Hyde got the win in relief, allowing five runs on six hits in 4.1 innings of play.

Coppin set the tone early, scoring six runs in the bottom of the first on three hits while taking advantage of two Hornets errors. Emily Quintero singled through the right side and Giselle Ulloa drew a walk to put two runners on.  Sereno reached on an error but was credited with an RBI, and a throwing error helped CSU extend the lead to 2-0. After Lee-Scott drew a walk to load the bases, Corbett tripled to the gap in right center to clear the bases. Kylee Sandino traded places with Corbett with an RBI triple of her own to right center.

DSU answered with three runs in the second and two in the third to cut the deficit to 6-5, but Tapusoa took a 2-1 pitch over the fence in dead centerfield to extend the lead to 8-5.

Both teams went scoreless in the fourth, but the Hornets scored a run in the fifth, three in the sixth to take their first lead of the game at 9-8 and added an insurance run in the seventh.

Coppin will play back-to-back road games against Mount St. Mary's on Tuesday, March 31, and Towson on Wednesday, April 1. Next weekend, the Eagles will play a three-game MEAC series at Maryland Eastern Shore on April 3-4.
