NORFOLK, Va. — Norfolk State Athletics officially ushered in a new era for its softball program on Wednesday afternoon, renaming its home facility to TowneBank Field in a special pregame ceremony ahead of the Spartans' midweek doubleheader against Mid-Atlantic Christian University.

Held at the Norfolk State Softball Field, the ceremony brought together university leadership, athletics administrators, community partners, and supporters to celebrate the transformational partnership between Norfolk State and TowneBank.
Norfolk State Vice President and Director of Athletics Dr. Melody M. Webb opened the ceremony with welcoming remarks, setting the tone for a milestone moment in the program's continued growth.
Vice President for University Advancement Clifford Porter, Jr., J.D. followed with the statement of occasion, highlighting the significance of the investment and the lasting impact it will have on Norfolk State student-athletes and facilities.
University President Dr. Javaune Adams-Gaston then addressed those in attendance, emphasizing Norfolk State's commitment to excellence and the importance of partnerships that enhance the student-athlete experience.
The ceremony's centerpiece came with the official unveiling of TowneBank Field, marking the transition from the NSU Softball Field and symbolizing a new chapter for the Spartans.
Representing TowneBank, Charity Volman-Winn, President of TowneBank Norfolk, delivered donor remarks, reaffirming the organization's support of Norfolk State and its dedication to investing in the local community and its institutions.
Dr. Webb returned to the podium to deliver closing remarks, expressing gratitude to TowneBank and all those involved in bringing the vision to life.
The unveiling of the new signage drew applause from those in attendance, providing a fitting prelude to the day's competition as Norfolk State hosted Mid-Atlantic Christian in a doubleheader shortly after the ceremony.
With the renaming of TowneBank Field, Norfolk State continues to build momentum—both on and off the field—while strengthening partnerships that support the success of its student-athletes and programs.
