The Hawks scored first in the bottom of the second inning, plating two runs to take control. Kensey Mentzer's sacrifice fly to left field scored Richards, and Paige Perkins followed with an RBI single to bring home Emily Gunther, giving UMES a 2-0 lead.
Virginia Union scored its only run on an RBI groundout, cutting the deficit to 2-1. Later in the inning, UMES extended its lead to 3-1 on a solo home run from Skylar Skinner, followed by an RBI single from Gunther to score Lola Meyer, making the score 4-1.
In the fourth inning, Ryleigh Lilly's RBI double extended the Hawks' lead to 5-1.
In the fifth inning, the Maroon and Grey pulled away, scoring three runs to secure the game. COMMENTS FROM HEAD COACH AARON ROBINSON
On the opening of the new softball facility and community support
Oh, it was huge. Big. I loved the support. I loved being able to be a part of the groundbreaking and the ribbon-cutting — the entire process since I've been here — and then standing on the field and seeing it all come to fruition. All the bells and whistles, everything connected — it's a beautiful sight.
It definitely makes the place feel amazing. Having Robin (Pettit, UMES softball Hall of Fame member) involved and seeing her put her stamp on everything, while also sharing some stories, was just a great overall experience. It wasn't too much, it wasn't too little for the players. I love that they stayed composed. I love that they used it as fuel to get after it today and come away with two wins.
On the defensive growth early on in the season
Paris has definitely been wanting as many opportunities as possible in the circle, in the batter's box and at first base. She's hungry. She took some time over the past year to reflect on what she wanted and to heal from some things prior to getting here from a previous school. Now she's running on all cylinders. Any opportunity she has, I know she's going to make the most of it.
Danny (Brown), as a freshman pitcher, is being thrust into Division I college softball — facing different types of hitters, different strategies, seeing where teams are putting the ball, and being asked to execute things that test us. I love how we've rebounded in the circle, but also defensively. We're finding those hungry players, the ones who understand what it means to consistently leave it all out there and create opportunities for their teammates to contribute as well.
I'm very pleased with today and how we've grown over the past six games.
On the offensive output from the Hawks
When we're comfortable and bought in, when we're seeing the fruits of our labor, we're super confident. We had a lot of hits on Monday, and we got after it again this morning (Tuesday). Once we check that internal box for ourselves, we play with confidence.
I wanted us to have the same type of feeling we had in the fall when we put up some big hits and long balls, and we definitely did that. Getting in early, seeing the ball travel to different parts of the field, getting our feet under us in pregame — all of that prepares us to be ready for whatever the day brings. That's what we have to continue doing.
On what it will take for the Hawks to continue having success
We have to understand that as a Division I program, we're supposed to apply pressure like that when we face a Division II team. But we also have to carry the confidence from games like Southern and Hampton, when we jumped on them early — into every matchup. We can do that against anyone. We just have to play consistently, inning by inning, for seven-plus innings.
Take the game one pitch, one out, one hit at a time and make sure we get what we need out of the experience.
