Bowling Places Five in Top 15 at James Brown Invitational

TOWSON, Md. – Coppin State's bowling team opened the spring portion of its schedule on a high note, finishing 8-4 overall and fourth of seven in the team standings at the James Brown Invitational at AMF Towson this weekend.  Blessing Lawrence was the Eagles' top individual performer, placing seventh of 36 bowlers for the Tournament.
 
After opening traditional play with a Bye, Coppin won three-straight matches, besting Maryland Eastern Shore, 857-849, Virginia State, 691-633 and Barton, 862-519.  The Eagles closed with a tough loss to Morgan State.
 
Coppin won four of five Baker matches, once again defeating Virginia State and Barton before being edged by the Bears.  The Eagles closed out the day with back-to-back victories over Tournament Champion Delaware State, 914-805, and Norfolk State, 833-623. 
 
Sunday's bracket play saw Coppin defeat Morgan State, 4-1, in the opener before falling to the Hornets and Bears in six games each.
 
Lawrence and Victoria Davis both placed in the top ten with Lawrence totaling 882 pins to average 176.40 and Davis finishing tenth with a 163.80 average.  Lawrence opened the Tournament with a 197 in the Bye while rolling a high of 201 against Barton.  Lawrence averaged 17.64 pins per frame with a 78.0 overall fill percentage while tallying 17 strikes and converted on 84.0% of her makeable spares.
 
Davis had the best game of any Eagle during traditional play, recording a 220 in a win over the Hawks.
 
Shenae Harrison (787/157.40), Abigail Brockington (777/155.40) and Shakyia Johnson (736/147.20) finished in 12th, 13th and 15th, respectively. Coppin was the only team to place at least four individuals in the top 15.
 
Harrison led the Eagles in Baker style play, averaging 19.08 pins per frame to go with an 81.0 overall fill percentage.  She also led the way with 38 strikes and a 71.8% conversion rate on her makeable spares.
 
CSU returns to the lanes this weekend at MEAC Meet #2 on February 21-22 at AMF Norfolk.
