NORFOLK, Va., May 7, 2025 — No. 3 seed Delaware State outlasted No. 2 Norfolk State in a thrilling 3-2 extra-inning victory Wednesday evening in Game 3 of the 2025 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Softball Tournament. With the win, the Hornets remain in the winners bracket and will play again at 8 p.m. on Thursday, May 8.
Both teams battled through four scoreless innings despite several chances to strike first. Norfolk State stranded two runners in the first, while Delaware State left one aboard in each of the next three innings.
The Spartans broke through in the bottom of the fourth when Kailey Bryant tripled to right field and later scored on a fielder’s choice during Kira Turner’s at-bat, giving Norfolk State a 1-0 lead.
That lead held until the top of the seventh, when Delaware State’s Mi’Shon King sparked a rally with a leadoff double to left field. She crossed the plate on a well-executed sacrifice bunt by Annalisse Santana, tying the game at 1-1. Norfolk State went down in order in the bottom half, sending the game to extras.
In the eighth, the Hornets capitalized on their momentum, pushing across two key runs to take a 3-1 lead. Destiny Mitchell and Mianna Lopez each crossed the plate during the rally, giving Delaware State the cushion it needed heading into the bottom half of the inning.
Norfolk State made it interesting in the bottom of the eighth, as Qween Edmonds doubled to center and scored on a Lauren Sheehan single. However, Delaware State held firm to seal the win and remain undefeated in tournament play.
