No. 9 Auburn Tops South Carolina State in NCAA First Round

AUBURN, Ala., May 2, 2025 – The South Carolina State women’s tennis team saw its postseason run come to an end with a 4-0 loss to No. 9 Auburn in the opening round of the NCAA Championship at the Yarbrough Tennis Center. The defeat concludes the Lady Bulldogs’ season at 15-5. 

Auburn took early control by clinching the doubles point with wins at the No. 2 and No. 3 positions. Angella Okutoyi and Merna Refaat cruised to a 6-0 win over Nalanda Teixeria de Silva and Teodora Vujicic at No. 2, while Ava Esposito and Maria Garcia defeated Ashikha Amalnathan and Valeria Teran 6-1 at No. 3. 

In singles play, the Tigers maintained their momentum with straight-set wins at No. 3, 4, and 6 to secure the match. Ava Hrastar topped Teixeria de Silva 6-1, 6-1 at No. 3, Refaat followed with a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Amalnathan at No. 4, and Alice Battesti clinched the win with a 6-0, 6-1 result against Teran at No. 6. 

Matches at No. 1, No. 2, and No. 5 were left unfinished once the match was decided. 

Auburn advances to face No. 24 Wisconsin in the second round.
