North Carolina A&T State falls in NCAA Regional tiebreaker to Youngstown State

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – No. 8 North Carolina A&T State forced No. 4 Youngstown State to the regional elimination game after winning 2-1 in the mega match format. The Aggies battled but fell to the Penguins in the elimination best of seven baker match 4-0 en route to Youngstown State claiming the Rochester regional title.
 
MATCH 2 – North Carolina A&T State 2 – Youngstown 1
 
The Aggies started out taking the traditional format defeating the Penguins 1058-969 led by a 258 performance from Maya Avilez. Avilez bowled seven consecutive strikes in her game before back-to-back spares in the eighth and ninth frames closing the tenth with a strike and spare.
 
Victorya White bowled a 226 while Chloe Newberry recorded a 215. White tallied six strikes with five spares while Newberry also registered six strikes with four spares. Grace Stull bowled a 196 while Laura Garcia and Juliana Sams combined to bowl a 163.
 
In the baker total pinfall, Youngstown State evened the match score at 1-1 with a 1088-1024 victory over N.C. A&T. The Penguins won the first game by 10 pins, 201-191, before the Aggies responded with a 213-190 win in game two swinging the advantage in their favor by 13 pins.
 
Youngstown State won the next three games, 256-216, 194-188, and 247-216, to pull ahead by 64 pins forcing the best of seven baker round.
 
N.C. A&T opened the best of seven with a 216-175 win to go up 1-0, before YSU evened the tally at one all with a 226-177 win in game two. Youngstown State won game three 233-206 taking the 2-1 lead, but N.C. A&T rallied back to win the next three games, 196-183, 218-203, and 217-168, to win the best of seven round 4-2 and take the mega match 2-1 forcing the if-necessary elimination best of seven baker match.
 
MATCH 3 - Youngstown 4 - North Carolina A&T State 0
 
After a short break the teams returned to the lanes in the winner take all best of seven baker game to decide the regional champion who would advance to the NCAA Bowling final four. Youngstown State had momentum on their side from the start and won four consecutive games to win the Rochester regional title.
 
YSU took the first game 221-195 behind seven strikes. In game two the Penguins tallied six strikes to win 193-178 despite a turkey in the tenth frame from Newberry.
 
Youngstown State won by 23 pins in game three, 247-224, following seven strikes and four spares while the Aggies managed to post five strikes and six spares in the game.
 
In the final game, N.C. A&T bowled more strikes, seven to YSU’s six, but left one frame open with four spares which opened the door for the Penguins to take game four 221-204.
 
North Carolina A&T State finishes the season with an 87-38 record after winning the programs seventh MEAC Championship title and fifth in the last six years.
