MEAC Announces Weekly Tennis Honors

NORFOLK, Va., Apr. 16, 2025 — Morgan State senior Mikeal Carpenter was named Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Men’s Tennis Player of the Week. North Carolina Central junior Alejandra Hidalgo Vega was named Women’s Tennis Player, while teammate Marianna Zottoli earned Rookie of the Week honors. 

Carpenter (Sr., Suitland, Md.) delivered an outstanding week for the Bears, earning a dominant 6-0, 6-3 win at Coppin State and a hard-fought 3-set victory against Hampton’s Donte Armbrister (1-6, 6-1,6-2). He also teamed with Makkijha Brown to go 2-0 in doubles action. 

Hidalgo Vega (Jr., Madrid, Spain) helped NCCU finish 5-1 in the MEAC this regular season for the first time since 2013. She defeated Norfolk State’s Yuliya Yurkova in No.1 Singles with a pair of 6-4 sets before falling in her doubles match 3-6. Hidalgo Vega has earned double-figure singles victories every season that she’s been at NC Central, including this year’s 11-5 record in the No.1 slot. 

Zottoli (Fr., Tucuman, Argentina) improved to 8-8 in singles during her freshman campaign, securing a 6-2, 6-4 victory in No. 3 Singles over Ines Sabadie of Norfolk State before falling 4-6 in No. 2 doubles to Sofiya Tsitavets and Ines Sabadie. 

Other Top Performers 
  • Hugo Hidalgo Vega (NCCU) improved to 12-4 on the season after securing a hard-fought 6-4, 6-7, 1-0 (10-6) victory in No. 1 singles against Lucas Coupo-Moison at North Carolina A&T, clinching the match in a tense tiebreaker. He also played a key role in helping NC Central win the doubles point, teaming with Rodrigo Alves for a 6-4 victory in No. 1 Doubles. 
  • Yuliya Yurkova (NSU) picked up one of two team points against SC State with a win in singles over No. 1 Sofiya Chursina in three sets (7-6 [7-1], 3-6, 7-6 [8-6]). She added a 6-3 doubles win with partner Caroline Nicholls against NC Central at No. 3 against Hidalgo Vega/Valentina.
