NORFOLK, Va., Mar. 6, 2025 — North Carolina Central senior Hugo Hidalgo Vega has been named the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Men's Tennis Player of the Week, while Norfolk State,
freshman Igor Kubalka, earned MEAC Rookie of the Week honors.
Norfolk State freshman Yuliya Yurkova was named the MEAC Women's Tennis Player and Rookie of the Week.
Hidalgo Vega (Sr., Madrid, Spain) went 1-1 in singles, defeating Norfolk State’s Vladisav Gorbatenko with a 6-1, 6-1 victory, while falling to Campbell’s Thomas Drapeau in three sets (6-0, 3-6, 4-6). In doubles, he partnered with Rodrigo Alves to go 2-0, highlighted by a (6-4) win over Norfolk State.
Kubalka (Fr., Andrychow, Poland) had a solid week, going 1-1 in singles, with a dominant 6-3, 6-1 win over Chowan’s Maksim Kachuk, while dropping his singles matchup against NCCU’s Antoni Pankowski (6-3, 6-4). In doubles, he finished 1-1, securing a 6-4 victory over NCCU and falling to Chowan (6-1).
Yurkova (Fr., Vitebsk, Belarus) went 3-0 in singles and 3-1 in doubles for a 6-1 record on the week. In singles action Yurkova won a three-set thriller of Loyola Maryland’s Elena Hartley (6-2, 4-6, 1-0 (10-7)) and recorded a pair of two-set wins over Shaw’s Serena Teluwo (6-3, 6-0) and Chowan’s Feidi Rodriguez (6-0, 6-4). In doubles, she secured two 6-3 wins against Loyola Md. And Shaw’s doubles sets and ended the week with a 6-2 win against Chowan. Her lone loss of the week came against Maryland’s Kallista Liu and Ema Kovacevic (6-4).
Other Top Performers
- Victoria Linkovski (DSU) went 2-0 in singles this week, defeating Saint Joseph’s (6-4, 6-3) and Binghamton (6-2, 6-1). She also earned a 6-3 doubles win alongside Kit Yi Kaye Au-Yeung.
- Ava Chambers (HU) extended her singles winning streak to three matches, picking up straight-set victories over Eastern Florida State’s Nayara Alvarez Martin and Stetson’s Clelia Lombardi.
- Mitchell Yon (HU) won his second straight singles match in a three-set victory (1-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-6)) over Eastern Florida State's Konstantin Kukaras, continuing his strong performance.
- Jakub Solarski (NSU) went 2-0 in singles, defeating Chowan’s Egor Pischelev 6-4, 6-3 and NCCU’s Kareem Abdul Hakim (6-3, 6-0).
- Victoria Linkovski (NCCU) had an undefeated week in singles (2-0), winning in straight sets against Saint Joseph’s and Binghamton, while going 1-1 in doubles play with a win over Saint Joseph’s.
- Alejandra Hidalgo Vega (NCCU) helped NC Central split two matches, winning a hard-fought three-set singles match in a victory over Longwood and securing the team’s only doubles win at UNC Asheville.
