Softball Knocks Off UMES with Doubleheader Sweep

SALISBURY, Md. (March 29, 2025) – Howard University softball team got back in the win column after Saturday's doubleheader sweep at Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES). HU defeated UMES in game one, 6-1, followed by a 7-2 victory in the nightcap.
 
HOWARD 6, UMES 1 (GAME 1)
 
Howard manufactured six runs on nine hits, led by senior Alyssa Vasquez (Eastvale, Calif.) going a perfect 4-of-4 with two runs scored in the victory.
 
HU jumped out an early 2-0 lead after one inning.
 
Senior Mia Gonzales (Atwater, Calif.) kept the Hawks guessing at-bat, throwing four shutout innings before MEAC (Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) Preseason Pitcher of the Year Julia Holt (Tucson, Ariz.) came off the bench. The Arizona product earned a three-inning save with three Ks.
 
Howard scored three times in the fifth, highlighted by a two-run single from sophomore outfielder Bria Finley (Buford, Ga.), 5-0.
 
Next inning, Vasquez delivered an RBI-single to right field, bringing home Emma Foster (Los Gatos, Calif.) as an insurance run, 6-0.
 
Bottom six, UMES avoided the shutout with an unearned run before falling to Howard, 6-1.
 
HOWARD 7, UMES (GAME 2)
 
HU notched seven runs on 13 hits with five Bison registering multi-hit performances. Senior Sidney Fletcher (Whittier, Calif.) went 3-of-4 with three RBIs in the victory.
 
In the first frame, Fletcher delivered a two-run single to right field and gave the Bison a 2-0 cushion after one.
 
Next inning, the Bison exploded for four runs; thus, taking a commanding 6-0 lead after two innings.
 
Bottom five, UMES got on the board with two unearned runs to cut the margin, 6-2.
 
In the seventh, second-year Bison Cheyenne Castille (Eastvale, Calif.) recorded an RBI-single to keep the Hawks at bay.
 
Senior Jordin King (Pomona, Calif.) got the starting nod in game two, going 4.0 innings with three strikeouts in the win.
 
UPCOMING SCHEDULE
 
HU (13-17, 7-1 MEAC) wraps up its season series with the Hawks Sunday (March 30). Game time is scheduled for noon in Salisbury, Md.
