Women’s Hoops Stymies Colgate in Fourth Quarter, Advances to Second Round of WNIT

HAMILTON, N.Y. – Angel Jones led all players with 14 points and Laila Lawrence posted another double-double, leading Coppin State's women's basketball team to a 58-48 victory at Colgate in the First Round of the WNIT on Saturday night. The Eagles improved to 19-14 on the season with their second postseason win in school-history.

  • Jones made 7-of-14 shots from the floor for her game-high 14 points to go with four rebounds and five steals while dishing out a pair of assists.
  • Laila Lawrence posted her 22nd double-double of the season with ten points and 12 rebounds while adding two steals and three blocks.  Her 349 rebounds this season is a new CSU single-season record.
  • Lawrence's 45 blocks are now 4th in the school single-season history and her 84 steals rank fifth.
  • Dani McTeer also finished in double figures, scoring a season-high 12 points on 6-of-8 shooting.  She added four rebounds, two assists, two steals and a block.
  • Tiffany Hammond followed with eight points on a pair of threes along with seven rebounds.
  • Tyler Gray, who recently returned from injury, came up big with seven points, four rebounds and three assists while Mickelle Lowry and Cire Worley combined for seven points.
  • Coppin held Colgate to just 25.0% shooting and just five points in the fourth quarter while scoring 20 points on 7-of-12 shooting (58.3%) in the final ten minutes.
  • The win was Coppin's first postseason win since the 2007 WNIT when it defeated Saint Joseph's, 67-52
How it Happened
  • After trailing, 43-38 after the third, Coppin's defense stymied Colgate throughout the fourth quarter and held the Raiders scoreless for nearly nine minutes in the final period.
  • McTeer and Jones opened the quarter with back-to-back baskets before Jones hit a driving layup with 7:04 left, giving the Eagles back the lead.
  • Jones added a pullup jumper and Hammond put the final dagger on the Raiders with a three at the 1:35 mark, giving CSU a 53-53 lead with 1:35 remaining.
  • Colgate finally got on the board with a pair of free throws with 1:02 remaining and hit its only field goal of the quarter with a three with 41 seconds to play, cutting the margin to 54-48.
  • Hammond and Lawrence sealed the win with four free throws in the final 30 seconds.
  • At the half, Coppin trailed 27-25 despite closing the half on a 14-4 run with Lawrence scoring five points.
