MEAC Announces Weekly Women’s Tennis Honors

NORFOLK, Va., Mar. 19, 2025 — South Carolina State graduate student Hind Semlali was named the MEAC Women’s Tennis Player of the Week, while teammate, Ashikha Amalnathan earned MEAC Rookie of the Week honors.  

Semlali (Gr., Casablanca, Morocco) had a standout week for the Bulldogs, winning all four matches without dropping a set. She won in straight sets over Western Illinois (6-2, 6-1) and Southern Illinois (6-2, 6-2) in singles action. She secured dominant doubles wins with partner Sofiya Chursina including a 6-1 win over Western Illinois and a 6-2 win against Southern Illinois.  

Amalnathan (Fr., Grander, Ind.) had an unbeaten week, winning both her completed singles and doubles matches. She took down Southern Illinois in singles (6-3, 6-2) and won doubles matches against both Western Illinois (5-1) and Southern Illinois (7-5). Her consistent performance helped secure a 4-0 team sweep in both matches. 

Other Top Performers 
  • Kit Yi Kaye Au-Yeung (DSU) won her singles match against Coppin State’s Brandy Babcock-Hannah (7-5, 6-3) while also winning her doubles matchup versus Coppin State’s Sky Carter and Alison Azarak (6-0) with teammate Lucia Casas Blas.  
  • Alejandra Hidalgo Vega (NCCU) won two of her three singles and doubles matches on the weekend. Her victory against Quinnipiac clinched the match after winning the tiebreaker set 11-9. Hidalgo Vega won two straight sets versus Niagara as well improving to 6-3 on the season. 
  • Mariana Zottoli (NCCU) finished the week with a 1-2 record in singles, with a 6-0, 6-3 victory over Niagara’s Larisa Kotok. In doubles, she teamed up with Valentina de Aquino Monsanto to secure a 6-2 win over Quinnipiac.
