Howard Takes Down Delaware State to Punch Ticket to Semis

NORFOLK, VA –Destiny Howell led five Howard players in double figures with a team-high 15 points as the Bison cruised to an 85-49 victory over Delaware State in the quarterfinal round of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Women’s Basketball Tournament at the Scope Arena.

With the win, Howard (20-10), the tournament’s No. 2 seed, advances to Friday’s semifinal round, where they will face the winner of the quarterfinal matchup between No. 3 Maryland Eastern Shore and No. 5 Morgan State.

The Bison established control early, jumping out to a 21-8 lead behind eight first-quarter points from Howell. Defensively, Howard set the tone by forcing Delaware State into multiple turnovers and three shot clock violations.

In the second quarter, Howell’s teammates stepped up offensively. Zennia Thomas, Saniyah King, and Nile Miller combined with Howell to contribute 32 points, helping Howard extend its lead to a commanding 41-21 advantage at halftime.

Howard’s defense delivered one of its strongest performances of the season in the third quarter, holding Delaware State to just 20 percent shooting (3-of-15), while converting eight Hornet turnovers into 14 points during a dominant 25-7 run.

Overall, the Bison showcased their efficiency, shooting 7-of-15 from beyond the arc while commanding both the paint (28-12) and the boards (48-25).

Thomas, King, and Kaiya Creek each recorded 11 points, while Miller added 10 points and eight rebounds in the victory.

For Delaware State, Kiarra McElrath led all scorers with a game-high 24 points, while Mahogany Cottingham contributed 10 in the loss.

With their sights set on a MEAC title and an NCAA Tournament berth, the Bison now await their semifinal opponent.
