2025 Week 7 MEAC Football Preview

NORFOLK, Va. – The Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) enters Week 7 of non-conference play with a full slate of regional matchups and key rivalry games, highlighted by Homecoming celebrations at two MEAC institutions.

Delaware State returns home to host Southern Connecticut State for its Homecoming game, looking to bounce back after dropping its last two contests. Howard heads to Fairfield, Conn., to face Sacred Heart, following a 2-2 stretch over its last four outings. Morgan State, winners of two of its last three games, will celebrate Homecoming in Baltimore as they welcome Virginia University of Lynchburg. South Carolina State, fresh off a dominant Homecoming victory, travels to Greensboro to take on the Aggies of North Carolina A&T.

Rounding out the weekend, Norfolk State hits the road to face Wofford in South Carolina, while North Carolina Central travels to Tallahassee for a matchup with the Florida A&M Rattlers.

Southern Connecticut State Owls (1-3, 1-1 NE10) at Delaware State Hornets (3-3, 0-0 MEAC)

Delaware State returns home to take on the Southern Connecticut Owls following a three-game road stretch with their most recent contest resulting in a 38-49 loss at Monmouth. The Hornets struggled in the passing game, completing just 11 passes for 112 yards. However, Delaware State’s rushing attack, which currently leads the MEAC in rushing, continued its dominance with 342 yards on the ground, led by Marquis Gillis’ 132-yard performance. Southern Connecticut enters the contest after a 34-21 loss to Bentley University. The Owls were led by senior quarterback Brandon Jorgensen, who threw for 191 yards and currently holds a 63 percent completion rate on 605 yards this season. Delaware State will welcome Southern Connecticut to Dover for their homecoming game, which will also feature a promotion for Breast Cancer Awareness, with kickoff scheduled for 12:00 PM.


 

Howard Bison (3-2, 0-0 MEAC) at Sacred Heart Pioneers (4-2, 0-0 NEC)

The Howard Bison will travel to Fairfield, CT, to take on Sacred Heart following a Week 6 bye. In their most recent contest, the Bison fell just short in a 12-13 loss at Richmond, a game decided by a missed field goal with under three minutes remaining. Howard stayed true to its defensive identity, holding the Spiders to just 35 passing yards, while the offense, despite some struggles, found success on the ground with 256 rushing yards.  Howard heads into this matchup against Sacred Heart following the Pioneers’ 42-35 overtime loss to Central Connecticut State. Dual-threat quarterback Jack Snyder will be a focal point for the Bison defense, as he threw for 218 yards and two touchdowns while rushing for 76 yards and an additional touchdown against Central Connecticut. Sacred Heart is no stranger to MEAC competition, as this will mark their third game against a MEAC opponent this season. Howard currently leads the all-time series against Sacred Heart 2-0, with their most recent matchup resulting in a 21-14 victory for the Bison.



Virginia University of Lynchburg Dragons (1-2, 1-1 NCCAA) at Morgan State Bears (2-4, 0-0 MEAC)

Morgan State will host Virginia University of Lynchburg at Hughes Stadium following a narrow 24-27 loss at Georgetown. The Bears struggled to establish a running attack against Georgetown, but quarterback Kobe Muasau was a key contributor, throwing for 264 yards, including a 64-yard completion to Malique Leatherberry. Morgan State, which began the season 0-3, has found its rhythm, going 2-1 in its last three contests. Virginia-Lynchburg enters the matchup with a 1-2 record, as Morgan State will be the first stop of their two-game road stretch. The Bears currently hold a 3-0 all-time series lead over the Dragons, with an average winning margin of 38.6 points.



South Carolina State Bulldogs (3-3, 0-0 MEAC) at North Carolina A&T Aggies (1-5, 1-2 CAA)

South Carolina State hits the road for the first of two consecutive away contests following a dominant 49-6 homecoming victory over Savannah State. In that win, quarterback Ryan Stubblefield continued his strong play, throwing for 206 yards and two touchdowns, while William Atkins IV added 162 yards on 9-of-11 passing.  North Carolina A&T enters the matchup following a narrow 34-38 loss to William & Mary. The Bulldogs’ defense, coming off its best statistical performance of the season, will focus on redshirt sophomore quarterback Kevin White, who has thrown for 736 yards over three games with a 64.4% completion rate. The Aggies currently hold a 4-8 series advantage over South Carolina State, though in their last meeting in 2024, the Bulldogs snapped a seven-game losing streak with a 45-25 win in Orangeburg.    



Norfolk State Spartans (1-5, 0-0 MEAC) at Wofford Terriers (0-5, 0-2 SoCON)

The Norfolk State Spartans will wrap up the final game of their three-game road stretch before returning home for homecoming, traveling to Spartanburg, South Carolina, to take on Wofford at Gibbs Stadium. The Spartans’ most recent outing came in a loss to Hampton in the Battle of the Bay, where Otto Kuhns threw for three touchdowns on 15-of-25 passing for 242 yards, with key contributions from Xzavion Evans, who rushed for 95 yards and a touchdown. Norfolk State struggled to contain Hampton’s rushing attack, allowing 255 yards and four touchdowns on the ground.  Wofford enters the contest seeking its first win of the season following a 21-23 loss to Western Carolina. Sophomore Jayden Whitaker leads the Terriers, as in the loss to Western Carolina Whitaker threw for 209 yards, including an 83-yard touchdown pass that gave Wofford the lead in the third quarter, though the team was unable to hold on. Kickoff is set for 1:30 PM. The Spartans will return home for one game before hitting the road for another stretch following the Wofford contest.



North Carolina Central Eagles (4-2, 0-0 MEAC) at Florida A&M Rattlers (1-3, 0-1 SWAC)

The North Carolina Central Eagles, riding the momentum of a three-game winning streak, will conclude their road stretch against SWAC opponent Florida A&M. In their last three contests, the Eagles have averaged 53.6 points per game, led by standout quarterback Walker Harris, who has thrown for 1,514 yards in six games, including 288 yards in the recent 50-42 win at Texas A&M–Commerce.  Florida A&M enters the matchup with a 1-3 record following a 14-42 loss to Alabama State. Quarterback RJ Johnson III, who completed 20 passes for 133 yards in that contest, will be a focal point for the Eagles’ defense, which has found its stride, ranking second in the conference in sacks and first in interceptions. The two programs have not met since 2019; however, the Rattlers hold a 8-4-1 series advantage, including a 28-21 win in their last meeting.
