MEAC Announces Weekly Tennis Honors, presented by Coca-Cola

NORFOLK, Va., Jan. 31, 2025 — South Carolina State junior Mikalai Bankou has been named the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Men’s Tennis Player of the Week, presented by Coca-Cola, while teammate, freshman Julius Augunas, earned MEAC Rookie of the Week honors. 

Howard sophomore Ava Chambers was named the MEAC Women’s Tennis Player of the Week. 

Bankou (Jr., Belarus) led S.C. State to its first-ever win over Georgia State. He went undefeated in singles with a three-set win (7-5, 5-7, 6-0) over Georgia State’s Baran Soyler and a 6-4, 6-2 win against UT Chattanooga’s Gabriel Castillo.  Bankou also secured a 6-1 win at No. 1 doubles against UT Chattanooga, while his doubles match against Georgia State went unfinished with a tied score of 6-6. 

Augunas (Fr., Kaunas, Lithuania) earned a singles win over Georgia State’s Gabriele Datei (6-4, 2-6, 6-3). Augunas won both his doubles matches on the week including a 7-5 win over Georgia State and a 6-2 win over UT Chattanooga, both at No. 2 doubles. 

Chambers (So., Wellington, Fla.) secured a hard-fought three-set win (6-2, 5-7, 7-5) at No. 3 singles over Georgetown’s Katie Garofolo-Ro. Chambers singles win was one of two team points scored by the Bison in the match.  

Other Top Performers     

  • Hugo Hidalgo Vega (NCCU) posted a 1-1 singles record, including a victory over the No. 38 player in the nation Pedro Rodanes, earning his team's only point against No. 12 Duke. 

  • Mikeal Carpenter (MSU) secured a hard-fought 6-1, 4-6, 6-2 win against Delaware’s Karol Malriz at No. 1 singles to score the Bears lone match point.
