NORFOLK, Va. (September 2, 2024) – The Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) revealed its women's volleyball weekly honors where Howard University saw a pair Bison acknowledged for their outstanding performances at the annual DMV Invitational. The announcement came Monday evening.
Junior outside hitter
Rya McKinnon (Hoover, Ala.) claimed MEAC Player of the Week while fellow outside hitter senior
Dami Awojobi (Hempstead, N.Y.) took home the league's Defensive Player of the Week.
McKinnon, two-time MEAC Player of the Year, recorded a pair of double-doubles during opening weekend. Friday (Aug. 30), she notched 15 kills and 10 digs in the 3-1 victory over George Mason. Two days later (Sept. 1), the Alabama native registered 19 kills and 10 digs in the sweep against crosstown rival Georgetown. Currently, McKinnon leads the MEAC with 4.40 kills per set.
For Awojobi, she totaled 29 digs and 10 blocks during the three-match tournament. In the victory over Mason, she notched six blocks. The following day (Aug. 31), the New York product racked up 12 digs at George Washington (GW). As of today, she ranks top 10 in the league with 1.00 blocks per set and 2.90 digs per set.
Sophomore setter
Sydnei Jones (Bridgeville, Pa.) received honorable mention after averaging 22.7 assists per set opening weekend, including a career-high 29 dimes at GW.
Coppin State's McKenzie Parks was named MEAC Rookie of the Week while Norfolk State's Sydney McCree earned Setter of the Week honors, respectively.
On Sept. 5-7, the Bison return to action when they kick off their trip to Texas for the Molly Howard-Gerwig Memorial Tournament, hosted by Houston Christian.
