DURHAM, N.C. – North Carolina Central University's men's basketball head coach LeVelle Moton will be honored with the 2024 President's Lifetime Achievement Award for his remarkable service in the community.

The President's Lifetime Achievement Award, first introduced by President George H. W. Bush as part of the Points of Light industry, honors individuals who have made a lasting impact through volunteer work. This award is given to those who have devoted significant time and effort to improving their communities and making a positive difference in the lives of others.

Moton was a well-known basketball player in the Triangle area before coaching, competing for NCCU in the late 1990s and receiving many accolades including the CIAA Player of the Year in 1996. He averaged 23.5 points per game in the 1994-95 season, scoring over 1,700 points before graduating.

Now as the head coach of his former team, Moton has become the all-time winningest men's basketball coach at NC Central earning his 252nd victory last season. Known in his playing days as "Poetry in Moton," he has made an even bigger impact by founding the Velle Cares Foundation hosting events for back-to-school, teachers of the month and his Single Mothers Salute celebration. Another project that hits close to home for Moton is the creation of affordable housing units as one of the owners of Raleigh Raised Developments.

Moton reflects on his journey stating, "I just hope people respect what I do through my work, through my commitment, through my dedication, through my community, and through other people in touching the lives of these young men."

The President's Lifetime Achievement Award ceremony honoring Moton and other Durham County recipients will be held on October 5, 2024, at the North Carolina Central University Student Center in Durham from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.
