For the third consecutive year, the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) will celebrate Hispanic and Latinx Heritage Month as part of its ‘We Are MEAC’ year-long diversity and inclusion initiative.
National Hispanic Heritage Month, observed from September 15 to October 15, honors the histories, cultures, and contributions of individuals with ancestral ties to Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America.
September 15 holds special significance, marking the independence anniversaries of Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. Mexico and Chile also celebrate their independence on September 16 and September 18, respectively. Additionally, Columbus Day, or Día de la Raza, is observed on October 12, further enriching the month’s celebration.
“As we celebrate Hispanic and Latinx Heritage Month, we shine a light on the vibrant contributions of a vital community, both within the MEAC and across the nation,” said MEAC Commissioner Sonja Stills. “The rich diversity in our universities strengthens our institutions daily, and it’s something we should uplift throughout the year. We are proud to honor and recognize our student-athletes from Hispanic and Latinx backgrounds during this meaningful time of celebration.”
The MEAC’s Hispanic and Latinx Heritage Month initiatives will highlight student-athletes from Hispanic/Latin countries across its eight-member institutions through social media spotlights.
