NORFOLK, Va., August 31, 2024 – All eight teams competed on day two of the 2024 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference volleyball opening weekend. Maryland Eastern Shore remains undefeated with a 2-0 record in back-to-back victories against Mercyhurst.
COPPIN STATE
QUEENS, N.Y. - Coppin State's volleyball team took a set from St. John's, but fell to the hosts at their Red Storm Invitational on Saturday afternoon at Carnesecca Arena. The Eagles went 2-1 in the season opening tournament, coming in second place to St. John's who went 3-0.
St. Johns def. Coppin 3-1 (25-21, 25-20, 22-25, 25-18)
TaKenya Stafford notched her second double-double on the weekend, finishing with a team-high 13 kills on .171 swinging to go with 12 digs and two blocks.
Sophia Bertotti Metoyer and Ezgi Kucuk had nine kills apiece. Metoyer led the Eagles with four blocks while Kucuk and Parks had three each.

DELAWARE STATE
HARRISONBURG, Va. - Delaware State’s Gerren Tomlin and Valeria Otero both recorded double-doubles, in an extended five-set loss to the Presbyterian Blue Hose (3-2) on Saturday at JMU Convocation Center.

Tomlin led the team with 13 kills and 18 digs, while Otero had 11 kills and 12 digs. Morgan Allen chipped in for with 18 digs to go with seven blocks from Kelsie Dawson.

HOWARD
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Howard University women's volleyball team suffered its first setback of the young season, falling in straight sets to crosstown rival George Washington.
George Washington def. Howard 3-0 (19-25, 18-25, 19-25).
Duo Rya McKinnon (Hoover, Ala.) and Dami Awojobi (Hempstead, N.Y.) led the Bison attack. McKinnon, two-time Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Player of the Year, racked up 10 kills (team-high) and eight digs while the New York native finished with 12 digs (team-high) and eight kills in the loss.

ERIE, Pa. - Maryland Eastern Shore defeated Mercyhurst 3-0, earning them a two-game series sweep, as the only team in the MEAC who went undefeated for the week.

Maryland Eastern Shore outnumbered Mercyhurst in kills (32-23) and blocks (8-1). Nkemjika Ikemefuna lead the team with nine kills and three blocks in the victory.

BALTIMORE, Md. - Morgan State began day two of the Morgan/Towson Invitational welcoming Duquesne to Hill Field House on Saturday morning. The visiting Dukes earned a 3-1 non-conference victory.

Morgan State (0-2) was paced by Addison Metts and Daniela Ferreira, who each tallied six kills. Betts, who hit .429 with no errors, added a service ace and five digs, while Ferreira added seven digs, and two service aces. Jada Williams and Madison Grace each had five kills.

NORFOLK, Va. - Gabrielle Gilbert finished with 12 kills against Miami (OH) University leading both teams, but it wasn't enough in the Spartans 3-1 loss over the Redhawks in the final game of the Norfolk State Tournament Saturday afternoon.

Four Spartans finished with six or more kills against the Redhawks: Gabrielle Gilbert (12), Alexa Harris (7), Jordan Lyons (7), and Sydney McCree (6).
Great performances on the team included 25 assists from junior setter McCree, four block assists from Jideofor, three block assists from Harris, and 10 digs from Lily Rose-Pichon.

DURHAM, N.C. – Despite the final scoreline, North Carolina Central University showcased their resilience and potential in a hard-fought match against N.C. A&T on August 31, 2024, at McDougald-McLendon Arena.

The Eagles were led by standout performances from Kamren Harper and Makenzi Searcy. Harper was a force at the net, finishing with a team-high attack percentage, making 13 kills with a .294 hitting percentage.

MONTGOMERY, Al. - South Carolina State played their final game at the Alabama State Invitational against ULM for a 3-0 defeat.
