NORFOLK, Va., May 8, 2024 -- Game three saw the first of two upsets on the day as No.4 North Carolina Central upset the No. 1 seed Morgan State 3-1 win in game three.
North Carolina Central will advance to round two, where they will be matching up against the winner of game four, Coppin State and Howard, at 6 p.m. on Thursday, while Morgan State will face No. 6 University of Maryland Eastern Shore at 12 p.m. on Thursday.
For North Carolina Central, Tyler Suttles, Kendall Smith, and Jaylah Barr all had a hit and a run. Shortstop Imara Harrell finished with a .750 batting average, with three hits on four attempts. For Morgan State, right fielder Amber Rivas finished with two hits and one run.
Jaylah Barr showed up big in the opening inning, as she hit a three RBI home run over the left field wall to put NCCU up 3-0 early.
MSU’s Rivas answered with a run in the bottom of the first after an RBI single from Victoria Fletcher, who pitched a 1,2,3 inning in the top of the second.
Neither team managed to score again throughout the remaining innings.
North Carolina Central saw action at the top of the fifth with Harrell hitting the first triple of the game. Despite loading the bases in the top of the fifth inning, NCCU had no runs cross home plate.
The Bears tallied final two hits in the bottom of the seventh but could not translate those into runs scored as the Eagles secures a 3-1 upset.
