NORFOLK, Va., May 8, 2024 -- No. 3 Coppin State completed the second upset of the day one securing a 6-4 extra-inning game against No. 2 Howard.
Howard had a 2-0 advantage with back-to-back RBIs in the bottom of the first. Alyssa Vasquez had an RBI double with a run scored by Jordan. Vasquez scored a run in the next play-off and RBI from Merci Hart.
The Coppin State Eagles scored their first two runs to tie the Bison, featuring a two RBI double from Fonoti and a run scored from Aniyah Hale and Celeste Gonzales.
A few innings later, Seryna Esparza from Coppin State hit a two RBI single up the middle to score Gonzales and Fonoti and giving Coppin State a 4-2 lead at the top of the fifth inning,
Howard responded with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the fifth to add a run and putting the score at 4-3.
Following a scoreless sixth inning, Howard’s Bianca Worthy singled to right field scoring Angel Riggens in the bottom of the seventh and evening the score at four-all forcing extra innings.
The next two innings went scoreless as the teams remained deadlocked at four when the game was paused for a lightening delay.
After the resumption of play, Aniyah Haley walked to first and came home on a Gonzles two rbi single bunt that advanced both runners home. A throwing error from the Bison's third baseman put Coppin State up 6-4 at the top of the tenth.
In the bottom half of the inning Merci Hart hit a double with two outs on the board. Amelia Webber hit a single down the left line that advanced Hart to third.
Cheyenne Castille grounded out to short stop for the final out as Coppin State secured upset and the 6-4 win to advance the game seven semifinal against No. 4 North Carolina Central on Thursday evening at 6 p.m.
